Jump to RecipeWhat Is Matcha?
Matcha is a high-quality green tea that is finely ground into powder. When prepared, matcha powder is whisked with hot water [instead of steeped in boiling water] that forms a frothy, vibrant green tea packed with unique health benefits.
Unlike traditional green tea, which is usually bagged and steeped in hot water to extract the flavor and nutritional properties, matcha powder is directly combined whisked in with hot water.
Major Matcha Benefits
- Gives Energy Boost Without The Jitters. Matcha is made from the ground tea leaves of Camellia sinensis—the same plant used to make green, black, white, and oolong teas. These leaves contain an amino acid called L-theanine. It reduces stress responses, leaving us feeling calm and softening the sometimes-harsh side effects of caffeine.
- Antioxidants Tea leaves are known for their antioxidant properties, thanks to their high concentrations of catechins, including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Matcha offers 3x more EGCG than steeped green tea and has the highest antioxidant potential than any other tea.
- Great For Our Brain – Studies suggest the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effects can help slow aging of the brain and may prevent Alzheimer’s. Research shows that the EGCG, L-theanine, and caffeine in matcha can increase cognitive performance by boosting attention and memory.
- Heart Health Drinking tea on a regular basis can help protect against cardiovascular disease. The EGCG in matcha can decrease oxidative stress and inflammation, repairing and protecting heart muscle. It can also help lower cholesterol levels, to reduce the chance of heart attack and stroke.
- Speeds Up Metabolism This benefit is believed to come from matcha’s caffeine and EGCG contents. It can help stimulate your metabolism and support weight management.
- Strengthens Immunity I think during flu season and in Covid times, we’re all looking to boost our immunity! Sipping on matcha gives you immune-boosting flavonoids and double the amount of vitamin C than any other tea.
- Gives You Glowy Skin so as an esthetician, I’m willing to do pretty much anything for glowy bright skin! Catechins in matcha have been linked to anti-aging, prevents wrinkles, discoloration, and sun damage. It can also reduces skin’s sebum production to prevent acne.
- Improves Mood Matcha’s caffeine content can increase dopamine to improve mood. The L-theanine in this green tea relaxes you by affecting the dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain to improve feelings of well-being and reduce anxiety. Who wouldn’t want that!?

Where Can I Find Powdered Matcha?
You can find this green tea powder pretty much anywhere now! Marshall’s always has a great selection, as well as amazon!
I’m going to link a few of the ones I’ve tried, that are gluten free and delicious! You only use a tiny bit, so it last a long time! You can also find unsweetened Matcha, which has less sugar in it, although it’s a lot more bitter.
Why Add The Chai?
They go so well together! The mild bitterness from the matcha powder is balanced out by the other spices, which makes the drink smooth. This is the only Chai syrup I use. I buy mine at Marshall’s but when I can’t find it, you can also order it on amazon, this also lasts for such a long time! I know some people think Matcha has a bit of a “grassy” flavor, but I think adding just a little bit of Chai makes this taste like Christmas in a glass!
In this post, I shared my favorite iced matcha latte recipe. It has saved me SO MUCH money from my constant Starbucks trips! I hope you give this a try and love this highly beneficial, but delicious and gluten free drink!
