Since it’s November, I think it’s the perfect time to talk about gluten free gravy. With the holidays coming, chances are you’re probably going to be eating lots of turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes – probably topped with gravy! Keep reading to find out all you need to know about gluten free gravy!
Is All Gravy Gluten Free?
Short answer, no! So of course everyone makes their gravy differently! Some people use store bought gravy in a package, some prefer to make homemade gravy using bouillon cubes, and some like to use the turkey drippings for their homemade gravy.
Now, generally in any homemade gravy one of the main ingredients is flour, often used to thicken up the mixture. But of course that immediately makes it not gluten friendly.
If you’re a guest at someone’s home for the holidays then you probably aren’t the person making the gravy, so be sure to double check that it’s safe for you to eat. Some questions you want to ask are ‘is there flour in this?’ ‘Did you use any spices in this gravy?‘ Most of the time, I’d rather be safe than sorry unless I know for sure the gravy is GF. I usually just skip it all together to avoid getting accidentally glutened.
A good way to make your homemade gravy gluten friendly is to use cornstarch instead of flour! Cornstarch is an incredible way to thicken up any sauce and still keep it gluten free.
If you choose to buy packaged gravy there are a ton of delicious gluten friendly options. McCormick Turkey Gravy – that one is my personal favorite, it has a ton of flavor! All you have to do is heat it up in a saucepan. They also make a dry gluten free mixture that you whisk together with water and cook on the stove.
So, there’s all you need to know about gravy! Most of the time, gravy is not gluten free. Unless it says otherwise, I would avoid it! The good news is there are tons of gluten free gravy options out there now so we don’t have to miss out! Happy Holidays!
