I think you’ll all agree with me when I say taco night is one of the best dinners of the week! It’s a staple in my house – because it’s fast, yummy, and always a crowd pleaser. With Cinco De Mayo coming up, it’s the perfect time to share my favorite gluten free taco recipe!
Jump to RecipeCan you eat tacos if you’re gluten free?
Tacos are one of those meals where you don’t have to change much to make them gluten-free.
Most taco ingredients are naturally gluten free, including the meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and salsa. You just need to use gluten-free taco seasoning and gluten-free corn tortillas!
Gluten Free Taco Seasonings
Most taco seasoning packets contain common ingredients, the mixes vary slightly from one brand to another. Tradition taco seasoning spices include –
- Paprika
- Oregano
- Onion Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Cumin
- Salt
- Pepper
I can sometimes have a reaction to onion powder or garlic powder, because some companies use anti-caking agents made from wheat flour or starch in their spices – both of which contain gluten. So not all taco seasoning is gluten free, some brands add wheat flour or other gluten containing ingredients.
So I always opt for the taco seasoning mix that’s labeled GF or gluten free just to be safe.
Gluten Free Taco Shells
Most taco shells are naturally gluten-free, as they’re made from corn tortillas. While corn is naturally gluten-free, corn that’s in a processed food product, like taco shells, may contain gluten due to other ingredients included in that product or from cross contamination.
So, again I always opt for a taco shell that specifically states it’s GF on it’s label. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
For soft shell tacos, I like to use Toufayan GF Tortilla wraps [I find them at Publix, I’ll link them here but Amazon only sells them in bulk]
I also use the Mission GF soft taco tortillas, but to be honest they’re my second choice because I find them to be chewy and get stuck in my teeth, but that’s just my opinion. [I can usually find these at Walmart.]
For hard shell tacos
I always use Old El Paso GF hard taco shells, I can usually find these anywhere!
