With the weather cooling down, I thought it was the perfect time to share our family’s American Chop Suey recipe. This is one of those warm meals that makes me think of going to my Nana and Papa’s house on Sundays. So aside from the happy memories – it’s also delicious. I’ve had to tweak it since I’m gluten free now but it’s still perfection. Keep reading to find out how you can make this yourself.

I think American chop suey is one of those recipes that everyone makes their own way, so it’s always slightly different. I’ll be sharing with you my family’s way of making it. With only 4 ingredients, it makes this the perfect weeknight meal when you just don’t feel like making something extravagant.
A lot of people put a ton of ingredients in theirs, and to be honest we’re just plain and simple eaters in our house.
- tomato soup
- white onion
- grassfed beef [you can also use ground turkey]
- gluten free pasta
As far as pasta goes, we prefer to make this with elbows. I can usually find gluten free elbows made by Barilla or Bionaturae. If you can find it, Bionaturae is my personal favorite for GF pasta!
Is American Chop Suey the same as American Goulash?
This is something I just learned, apparently if you live outside of New England, it’s likely that you know this classic comfort meal as “Goulash” instead of American Chop Suey. I had NO idea this was a New England thing! So, if you’re reading this thinking ‘what the heck is American Chop Suey’ – to you, it might be Goulash!
Gluten Free Tomato Soup
So, the reason I had to tweak this meal from how we always made it growing up, is the tomato soup. We always used Campbell’s Tomato Soup – which in my opinion is the elite tomato soup. You just can’t beat it. And unfortunately, it’s not gluten free. It contains wheat flour. So until they finally get on board and make a gluten free version, I’ve had to use something different.
Pacific Foods is the brand I choose to use here as a replacement. It’s their plain creamy tomato soup NOT the one mixed with roasted red pepper. You can usually find it at your grocery store and Target.
You of course can use whatever your preferred GF tomato soup is. I’ve heard great things about Dei Fratelli Tomato Soup but I haven’t gotten to try it yet. So for now, it’s Pacific Foods Creamy Tomato Soup!
Gluten Free American Chop Suey
Ingredients
- 1 Lb Grassfed Beef [or ground turkey]
- 1 Box Gluten Free Pasta
- 1 Box Pacific Foods Creamy Tomato Soup
- 1 White Onion – chopped
Instructions
- Boil a pan of water for your gluten free pasta [I'm pretty sure the box says the pasta takes 11 minutes, I boil it for 14 minutes]
- Then in a large frying pan, start to cook your ground hamburger and add in chopped white onions
- You want the onions to be cooked and translucent
- Sometimes I drain the grease and fat out of the ground beef just by carefully tipping it out into the sink and then let it keep cooking.
- Once the hamburger isn't pink anymore you know it's cooked. So you can either add the tomato soup into the frying pan and mix it together with the beef and onions OR you can let it warm up in a separate pan.
- I usually warm it up separate and then just ladle it on top in my bowl.
- After the pasta is done cooking, drain the pasta. *Again, you can mix it all together – it's totally up to you and makes no difference in the taste*
- That's basically it! It's super simple and quick.
- Enjoy!
Notes
How Long Does This Last?
You can save this American Chop Suey in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days. Although gluten free pasta doesn’t always keep that well – keeping it soaked in the tomato soup usually makes these leftovers still taste pretty good once it’s reheated!
So there it is! My american chop suey recipe, as you can see it’s really quick and easy. It’s the perfect dinner when it’s cold out, it also goes well with italian bread for those that aren’t gluten free! But, if you can find gluten free rolls you love I definitely recommend pairing this with warm bread!
